.....Four negro singers sign met opera contracts. Four talented Negro singers have signed contracts to sing background music for the Metropolitan presentation of Pietro Mascagna's "Cavalleria Rusticana". Rhea Jackson, Helen Colbert, Dorothy Candee and Ida Jackson's singing in "Aida" earlier this year so impressed the Metropolitan's Choral master ,Kurt Adler, that he signed them for the new opera. The signing of the four marks another step forward for Negroes in the staid Metropolitan since Rudolph Bing took over as director. Bing signed Janet Collins as premiere danseuse before the season's start and has been giving her featured billing for every performance. Jet12/27/51, p64

NATIONAL BAPTIST CONVENTION
....Baptists Reelect Jemison, Set 4-Term Limit. Jet, 9/25/52, p28 (pic)
The National Baptist Convention, USA, reelected 77-year old Dr. David. V. Jemison of Selma, AL as president at its 72nd Annual Session in Chicago. At the same time, the convention redically revised its constitution to limit tenure of the presidency to four consecutive years. Constitutional revisions were adopted only after a stormy afternoon session which at times threatened to develop into a free-for-all platform brawl. Leading the fight for the changes were Dr. Marshall L. Shepard of Philadelphia, Dr. H.H. Humes of Mississippi, Rev. Gardner Taylor of Brooklyn, Rev. J. Raymond Henderson of Los Angeles, Rev. L. Evans of Nashville, and Rev. L.K. Jackson of Gary, Ind. The new document calls for appointment of a paid executive secretary, election of nine members at large to the board of directors, appointment of a certified public accountant of the church.

....First negro opens with the Met opera. For the first time in its 670year history, a negro dancer appeared on the stage of New York's world famed Metropolitan Opera house when ballerina Janet Collins danced a lead role in the extravagant ballet scene in "Aida", which opened the Met's 1950-51 opera season. Appearance of Miss Collins in the cast was in accord with a policy promise made to Rudolph Bing when he took over the management of the socially elegant but financially insolvent Opera House last year. Said Bing: "I have no objections to casting Negros in grand opera roles." A chorus of 13 professional Negroe singers appeared as Negro slaves in the "Aida" production. As first Negro to appear, Dancer Collins may help perk up the Met's lagging box office. An indication of this was seen when Harlem socialite Modesta Rockmore, purchased a $30.00 dress circle seat for the opening which entitled her to sit in the gilded "Diamond Horseshoe," a section usually reserved for top bracket names in US finance and government. Mrs. Rockmore, whose husband is Pullman porter, wore a $20,000 ermine coat. Jet, 11/8/51, p54

Mr. LEVIN. Mr. President, on September 30, 1996, our Nation, and the world, lost one of its most gifted documenters of history, photographer Moneta J. Sleet.

Moneta was the first African-American to win journalism's most prestigious award. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1969 for documenting the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His photograph of Coretta Scott King holding her 5-year-old daughter at Dr. King's funeral has come to symbolize the tragedy of this turbulent period in our nation's history.

Moneta spent the majority of his career chronicling our Nation's civil rights movement. We are grateful to have had Moneta to record this important part of our history. In 1956, he met a 28-year-old Martin Luther King, Jr., who at the time was a minister in Atlanta. Moneta fostered a close relationship with King, and later would travel with him to Sweden when he received the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. Moneta also accompanied Vice President Richard M. Nixon to Africa in 1957 when that continent was on the verge of independence.

Moneta was born in Kentucky in 1926. He attended Kentucky State and received a master's degree in journalism from New York University. Moneta went on to work for the Amsterdam News, Our World, Ebony, and Jet magazines. Moneta Sleet died in New York City at the age of 70, leaving behind his wife, three children, and three grandchildren.

On September 30, we lost an American treasure. I know my Senate colleagues join me in honoring the life of Moneta J. Sleet.
